NATRE calls on the government to reverse the illogical decision to cut subject knowledge enhancement grants

NATRE calls on the government to reverse the illogical decision to cut subject knowledge enhancement grants for those applying to train as secondary teachers of RE in 2025-2026.

In April 2024, we reported that the Conservative government axed the SKEs mid-way through the recruitment cycle. Fortunately, a reasonable number of grants had already been awarded. However, there were still some applicants who were unsuccessful in securing a place due to insufficient subject knowledge, something that the 6-week SKE course could have remedied.

NATRE are shocked that despite RE, yet again, missing its recruitment target for training in 2024-25, the present government has made such a short-sighted decision. The provision of SKE courses boosts recruitment by about a third. The subject can ill afford an even deeper cut in recruitment, especially as this could be prevented by investing a relatively small sum of money.

Please write to your MPs or use the graphic on social media to make them aware that action is needed now as graduates consider their applications to train to teach in 2025-26.
